So I’m mostly sticking to my rules from the very first post. Doing my best to avoid the fake meats until tonight. I have exactly two fake bratwurst, a half a bag of fake chicken nuggets and a half pack of fake pepperoni in my sister’s freezer. I feel I must eat these so as not to be a waster. But after that, so done with the frankenfood.
My eyeballs must be getting old, because when I bought my bag of greens+ smoothie mix last week, I missed the part where it said it had whey protien in it. Been using a scoop of that every day. It was expensive shit and so again I feel inclined to use it all up. I like the concept of the green shake, so when this bag is done I will be looking for a completely vegan alternative.
Far as the shakes are going, tried something new today that didn’t turn out half bad. I mixed a scoop pf greens+ with about 2/3 a cup of ruby red grapefruit juice, 2/3 cup Bolthouse farms carrot juice and topped that off with enough mixed frozen tropical fruit to fill my 20 ounce blender cup to the brim. The grapefruit juice was very near the perfect antidote to the overpowering sweet of the stevia in the greens+. A bit more experimenting with volumes and I might have it licked. Smoothie system seems to be keeping me from snacking all day, I might be onto something with this.
Now if I could just wean myself off caffeine again I would be golden. Oh if only.
I used to think stevia was the best frickin idea I’d ever heard and couldn’t figure out why more companies didn’t abandon their artificial sweetners and replace them with the natural alternative. Well now I know why. More and more products are switching over to stevia and they are, although no longer artificial, possibly worse tasting than ever before. I’ve read that there are differences in the aftertaste of stevia based on what part of the leaf it is derived from and that Reb A is the highest quality part of the leaf…. try finding that actually identified on a list of ingredients on something. Oh well, at least it’s not poison like sucralose and aspartame.
Anyhoo, why the rant? I went and bought my baggie of Greens+ Smoothie mix this afternoon and as I always do, I try the flavor of the shake I have purchased with water first, just to judge how tolerable it is. And uh, wow, so over sweet with that stevia just covered your tongue with fur afterbite. My half cup smoothie then turned into a 20 ounce smoothie as I poured every form of fruit juice I could find in the fridge in the bottle and topped that with about a half cup of mixed frozen tropical fruit. It tastes passable now, not too gritty and my tongue is slightly less furry. This shake is going to serve as lunch today. I am so tired of hunting for vegan alternatives at my sister’s house that I’m almost ready to throw in the towel. I would too, except, I dunno, once I get started I get addicted to not eating bad food. I would kind of like to keep that addiction.
What else…. supper was interesting last night. Made the determination that we were going to have taco salad. I know I’ve read in more than one cookbook that there are veggie fillings you can make to replace the ground beef, but damned if I remembered a single one of em last night and damned if I had the ambition to look. So, I got a package of white mushrooms and pulverized them with a chef’s knife. Then I took to frying them in olive oil. Then I added chili pepper, cumin, corriander, salt, pepper and fried it for awhile. Then I decided, no that wasn’t fancy enough, so I added onion salt and a shallot. For awhile I stirred that. Then turned off the pan as I decided it was done. Then my sister was taking a long time finishing what she was cooking for supper, so I turned the pan back on and crushed two cloves of garlic into the mixture. For awhile I thought that was good, then I changed my mind and dumped some taco sauce in there. Well then that was too mushy so I said to meself “Hey self, let’s throw in the leftover Greek Salad from the night before.” and so I did that. Then I went “Oh shit, you can’t fry cucumbers!” But I did anyway. Oh yes, at some point I dumped some balsamic vinegar in there too. I think maybe the kitchen sink ended up there as well.
But, all turned out well and it was actually quite yummy. I feel safe in saying it will never, ever, ever be duplicated again.
I had visions in my head when I started this thing that I would be doing some experimental cooking and maybe sharing a few recipes on this blog. Well, that doesn’t seem to be working out because, well, who has time to cook?
This is my first time actually looking at this thing on an actual computer since I started it. Had no idea pictures loaded so horribly off my phone and for some reason, sideways? Quoi? I just don’t have time to deal with the technical details. Anyhoo, what did I do today of note?
I bought me a new toy. It’s an Oster My Blend. I just discovered this thing yesterday and I am in love already. Personal blender where the blending cup is a 20 ounce sports bottle. Hooray. I bought one yesterday and I took a huge fruit smoothie to work for breakfast this morning. I sipped on it for the first 4 hours of my workday and didn’t get the munchies once, even when faced with the saltiest bestest beef jerky ever sitting in my fridge tempting me to do evil.
Because I am largely a combination of lazy/time strapped/full of good ideas, I’m considering making my early day meals sort of a more drinky kind of thing. I am going to head out for a lil shop-a-thon later and see what I can find in the way of mixes for green smoothies. I really don’t care if stuff tastes like chalk or cut grass, so long as it’s good for me. We will see how this goes.
So there was ample gnocchi leftover from last night, I brought it with me to share today at the house of my sister for sharing. After watching my neice scrape a large portion of my hard work into the garbage, my brother in law informs me he’s taking what’s left for lunch. Cuz uh…… yeah. I guess I get bread and mustard for lunch tomorrow. Yay me.
Picture gonna load sideways? Probably. Darned good recipe although very time consuming. From The Vegan Bible.
Finally figured out what to do with that acorn squash
So I’ve gone all week mostly animal product free (excluding the gaseous potato leek soup of course) and I now find myself at “Football Friday.” Headed into Edmonton to the Eskimos game. This poses 2 problems. The first problem is that I will be at West Edmonton Mall all day and there are only 2 places in the entire mall where I can get a vegan meal and I’m tired of both of them. Subway, which, how many veggie delight subs can one eat in a week? And Freshi, which would be good except everything seems to taste like lemon grass for some reason. Hmmm.
What to eat at the mall is the lesser of the two problems, what to eat at the football game is the bigger challenge. Back when I was just toying with the idea of going back to this lifestyle I had a heart to heart with my sister at a game. The decision that was made was that, for the sake of brats and sauerkraut and all things holy (to me anyway), I could not be vegan during a football game. If I’m gonna break down and have a bratwurst is something I haven’t decided on yet. I mean, I feel like such a cheater but other than believing it’s not healthy, I have no problem with eating it, and I only actually go to 3 football games a year anyway.
Man, I know it’s not comparable, but I sorta feel like an alcoholic taking just one day off from being sober with the promise of returning to sobriety the next day. Problem in this case is the people around me who will think I am making life difficult for them by limiting my food options will say “Well you ate meat at the football game yesterday, what’s one more hamburger?” And then we will be back to a repeat of last Saturday night where I spent my late evening vomiting up cheeseburger, fries and beef jerky vowing never to eat it again.
Bah. Well, enjoy your weekend everyone. Off to cheer for the green and gold.
